Many Gippslanders, including people from Warragul where he grew up, attended the ordination of Scott Lowrey as a Bishop in the Christ Church.
The consecration by the Archbishop of Melbourne Dr Phillip Frier was conducted at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne earlier this month.
The archbishop presented Bishop Lowrey with his pectoral cross, episcopal ring and mitre and the Bishop of Ballarat presented the pastoral staff.
Bishop Lowrey, who will continue to live at Warrnambool where he has been for the past 18 years, will perform various episcopal roles as an assistant to the Bishop of Ballarat.
His education at Dulcie Harris Kindergarten in Warragul, Warragul North primary school and Warragul Secondary College didn't provide many pointers to his future career.
The early years were mainly focussed on a dream to play Australian Rules football with the Melbourne club, although he did some training with Hawthorn.
Bishop Lowrey's love of football saw him play more than 300 games, from juniors at Drouin to a range of clubs including Pakenham, Leongatha, Orbost and Hill End and a couple in Melbourne.
He still retains a strong interest in country football as a central umpire with the Warrnambool and District Umpires Association.
But a "discovery" that there was more to life than football led to him studying a Bachelor of Arts and later a Bachelor of Divinity.
In 1990 the now Bishop Lowrey was ordained as a deacon and a year later as a priest, both at St Paul's Cathedral at Sale.
He served in the Leongatha, Korumburra, Orbost and Moe parishes before moving to Christ Church at Warrnambool in 2007 where with wife Felicity and daughter Cecilia were welcomed by the congregation and wider community.
He said a recent visit to Warragul, where he spent some quiet time at St Paul's Anglican Church, enabled him to reflect and be grateful for the community that nurtured his faith.
