With the Country Fire Authority's fire danger period in Baw Baw Shire beginning next Monday, Baw Baw Shire is urging residents to clean up their properties.
From Sunday, council began its fire hazard inspection program, aimed at reducing the risk of bushfires and their devastating impacts.
As part of the program, properties deemed a fire risk will be issued fire prevention notices directing owners or occupiers to remove and clear vegetation or other potentially flammable materials found on their land.
The danger period declaration will continue until the start of May.
Mayor Danny Goss said residents, especially those on rural properties were urged to prepare against fire risks.
But owners of residences and vacant blocks should also clear and remove vegetation and other potentially flammable materials such as leaves, branches and grass.
"It's everyone's responsibility to minimise the risk of fires across our shire, and that starts with cleaning up your own backyard, especially those on acreage and farms. This includes cleaning up leaves and branches around your house, cutting back grass and safely disposing of fuel," Cr Goss said.
To assist, Free waste drop-offs at transfer stations in Erica, Lardner, Neerim South and Trafalgar until the end of December.
Free drop-off will be offered at Erica tip on Mondays from noon to 4pm, Lardner tip on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm, and, Neerim South tip on Fridays from 10am to 4pm.
New local laws for burn-offs came into effect last Sunday.
The major change is that only land that is zoned for primary production can have a burn-off pile of greater than four cubic metres.
All other landowners will need to apply for a council permit if they intend burning more than the four cubic metres.
Cr Adam Sheehan encouraged people to take up the free waste drop-off offer to dispose of potentially dangerous material before the weather heats up.
"You can use this opportunity to dispose of potentially hazardous green waste free of charge before it really heats up," he said.
