Election of Independent urged for Monash to deal with climate issue.

Australia's energy and climate crisis was the focus of a pre-federal election forum hosted by independent candidate Deb Leonard.

Ms Leonard said the forum gave the 65 people that attended a chance to share their perspectives and express their concerns and aspirations.
The discussion emphasised Australia's progress in renewable energy, with 40% of the country now powered by renewables, and highlighted the potential for regional leadership in the shift toward cleaner energy.
The forum featured guest speaker Warragul local and former Loy Yang power station employee Tony Wolfe who said a minority government supported by an independent crossbench was needed to ensure the best outcomes for communities such as those in Monash.
Energy is being treated like a "political football", he claimed, adding that independents could hold decision makers accountable and ensure the best outcomes were achieved.
Mr Wolfe also said he was concerned about nuclear energy as an option stating it was impractical and costly.
Ms Leonard, a Phillip Island lawyer being supported by the Voices for Monash group, said the candid conversations and thoughtful questions touched on ensuring local communities received dividends from large-scale renewable projects and protected jobs during the energy transition.
She said the views expressed were crucial for shaping policies that address the climate crisis and ensure nobody is left behind.
The forum underscored the community's engagement with energy and climate and a desire for practical and people centred-solutions. People are concerned about how the energy transition will affect their lives, jobs and the future of the region, she said.
