Drouin event saved

Australia Day celebrations in Drouin are officially back on the agenda after two Baw Baw Shire councillors stepped in to organise an event.

A sausage sizzle and a live performance by local band The Stump Jump Band will take place at the Drouin Civic Park sound shell from 1pm to 3pm on Australia Day, with locals encouraged to go along and enjoy the food and atmosphere.
Drouin Rotary Club previously ran Australia Day activities with ther annual Party in the Park.
However, the club announced late last year the event would not be happening in 2025 due to a lack of a firm commitment from Baw Baw Shire Council on the level of financial assistance it would provide to assist costs.
Hearing this, Baw Baw Shire Councillors Ben Lucas and Jess Hamilton took it upon themselves to organise something for the community.
"Basically when everyone said that it was cancelled because of us I thought 'we better do something,'" Cr Hamilton said.
The pair contacted shire interim chief executive officer Martin Hopley, who helped develop an eleventh hour idea for an Australia Day event.
"We know it's late notice but we just wanted to give something to the community because we knew from the reaction we got they weren't very happy there's nothing," Cr Hamilton said.
Sausages have been provided at a low cost by local businesses while others have donated vouchers, with both Crs Hamilton and Lucas expressing their gratitude to how eager the community had been to help out.
In particular, they credited Ash McGibney from the Drouin Junior Football Club - who will be running the sausage sizzle for the day - saying it would not have come together without her.
The Rotary Club also will be jumping on board to assist.
"We know Australia Day's been a contentious issue for a few years. For us, it's just about celebrating what's great and getting something back for the community to come and celebrate together," Cr Lucas said.
"We live in the greatest country in the world and in one of the best spots in that country."
Cr Lucas also emphasised how important it was to hold an event at this time of year, especially with the cancellation of Drouin's Ficifolia Festival.
Cr Hamilton said locals were welcome to come down and enjoy an afternoon out in the park.
"It's not going to be as amazing as what the Rotary's was in the past but hey, a band, good people, dancing and a snag? You can't go wrong. Come down."
