A memoir capturing the history of railwaymen and timber workers, including in the Noojee area, has been shortlisted for the annual Victorian Community History Awards.
The publication, "Whistles Through the Tall Timber' by Nick Anchen, is a history of the Warragul-Noojee, Powelltown and Warburton rail lines, with a special look at Warragul, the railway capital of West Gippsland.
The book is a mixture of rail history, social history, enlivened with interviews with workers whose experiences cover many decades, written by a rail expert.
It is among 39 publications and projects vying for one of 11 awards headed by the $5000 Victorian Premier's History Award.
Those selected cover a wide range of topics recorded by individual organisations, authors, photographers about the state's maritime history, performing arts, disasters, community projects and individual achievements.
Other Gippsland stories and projects that have made the short list include A History of Yallourn Technical Colle 1928-1993 by Graham Goulding, Aspects of Wonthaggi's History through street and place names submitted by the district's historical society, a short history of Wallace Avenue Community Park at Inverloch and Omeo Historical Society and Debra Squires' History and Heritage of the Benambra, Ensay, Omeo and Swifts Creek districts.
