Councillor courses questioned

A breakdown of the $26,000 spent on councillor training courses in the last financial year has been provided.

Detailing the costs, Baw Baw Shire chief executive officer Mark Dupe denied councillor expenses were omitted from Baw Baw Shire's annual financial report to avoid embarrassment.
The details were provided after resident Irene Broadbent requested a breakdown during community participation time at this month's council meeting.
Mr Dupe said training expenses were published as part of councillor expenses on council's website. However, he noted "council has identified opportunity for improvement in expense reporting in future years."
The four councillors who had course expenses in the 2023/24 financial year included one current councillor - Cr Tricia Jones - and three former councillors.
Mr Dupe said Cr Jones attended a half-day media spokesperson training program, costing ratepayers $1583.33.
He said Farhat Firdous undertook courses totalling $12,929.68. They included a $8123 for the AICD course; $3398 for the Public Sector Women of Colour Leadership and Allyship Summit; $983 for three executive coaching sessions; and, $425 for a MAV chairing meetings workshop.
In addition, former mayor Annemarie McCabe had four expenses totalling $2751.97. They included $620 for AICD membership; $95 for ALGWA membership; $1583 for half-day media spokesperson training; and, $453 for a recalibrate workshop with Ruth McGowan.
Jazmin Tauru had one expense listed, an $8800 fee for the AICD course.
Mr Dupe said new regulations would now mandate annual professional development and, as a result, "all councillors will incur training expenses each financial year."
