Hundreds of Tynong residents and visitors last week celebrated the official opening of the new Tynong Post Office.
In early 2000, despite still being a small post office, Tynong was given a life-line by becoming a "rural transaction centre" with funding from the Federal Government.
This enabled the post office to have an Australia Post dedicated computer counter terminal for bill paying and parcel transactions.
The first unofficial post office in Tynong was established in November 1882, in the gatehouse of the railway station at the intersection of Tynong Rd and Nar Nar Goon-Longwarry Rd. The first railway employee was Robert J. Mitchell, who also became the post master.
In 1993, Australia Post introduced a new way of operating post offices and awarded the business owners a license to handle the mail. Current licensee Pauline Preston was given the opportunity to take on the license for the Tynong Post Office, taking over on July 1, 1993.
As it needed to move, the Tynong General Store owners, Clive Weston and Lesley Holt offered a corner of the general store in Tynong for the post office to operate.
Licensee Pauline Preston said the new building had a bright welcoming entrance with more space and brighter internal facilities.
