An upgraded pedestrian crossing and one-way traffic movement are set for the Williams Square carpark in Warragul.
The new crossing will aim to alleviate current confusion of who must give way, with pedestrians to be given priority. Signage currently states "pedestrians must give way to vehicles".
Baw Baw Shire hopes the works - funded by an external $104,562 grant - will be carried out by a contractor early next year to avoid disruption during the busy Christmas period.
Council recently advised businesses, residents and property owners abutting Williams St and Williams Square carpark of the proposed changes via a letter drop. If no substantial issues are raised from the consultation, council said a tender request would be issued.
The letter states the improvements would boost pedestrian safety and traffic movement.
As part of the proposed works, two parking spaces would be removed to allow for the raised pedestrian crossing on Williams St, linking Williams Square carpark and the entrance to Centrepoint Arcade. The taxi rank will remain.
Carpark traffic would be also limited to one-way, with formalisation of traffic movement when exiting Coffee Lane.
"It is anticipated these treatments will provide clarity for both pedestrians and motorists by clearly defining the priority movements," the letter said.
The works will be funded by a $104,562 grant received by council from the state government's "Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program".
The proposed works stemmed from a pedestrian and cyclist safety study carried out for Warragul and Drouin in 2022.
