Broadbent opposes genetic discrimination

Member for Monash Russell Broadbent has backed a move to end possible discrimination against people that undertake genetic testing.
He said although the Disability Discrimination Act prohibited discrimination based on genetic status there was an exemption granted to insurance companies.
Speaking in support of a successful motion in the House of Representatives by government Member for Macarthur in New South Wales, Dr Mike Freelander, Mr Broadbent said under the exemption insurers could penalise people with higher premiums, lower coverage or even deny access to private health and life insurance.
