Alpine resort to operate as normal

Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort is set to operate as normal this winter season, with "early bird" tickets now on sale.

It follows state government agency Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) seeking interest from commercial operators to take over the running of Mt Baw Baw as well as Lake Mountain.
Launching an expression of interest process in December, ARV confirmed the process closed last month and a panel was currently assessing submissions.
A spokesperson said ARV was unable to comment about the nature of associated submissions until they had been formally assessed and considered.
"If there is a concept that we are looking to move forward with, we will engage with staff and stakeholders accordingly," ARV said.
Noting it was unlikely the EOI process would be finalised before the snow season opens in June, the spokesperson said "it will not impact the operations of the resort for the coming winter."
Mt Baw Baw is now offering tickets, with "early bird" season passes in place until the end of the month.
Job vacancies at the resort also have been promoted and a six-person stakeholder consultation committee set. The members are: Paul Proctor and Leona Turra of the Mt Baw Baw Stakeholders Association; Matthew Youd of Erica Ski Hire; Richard Reid of Tanjil Lodge and Mount Baw Baw Ski Hire; Luke Connell of Baw Baw Shire Council; and, John Frearson of Baw Baw Scout Alpine Activity Centre.
In launching the EOI process in December, ARV chief executive officer Amber Gardner confirmed Mt Baw Baw continued to operate at a loss despite a number of initiatives to improve operational efficiencies,
"Mt Baw Baw and Lake Mountain are both well-loved alpine resorts, known for providing many Victorians with their first alpine experience," ARV said. "However, these resorts have faced a number of financial challenges over the years, with government entities unable to achieve a commercially viable model for these mountains."
It said commercial operators may be better positioned run the mountain in a more efficient way as well as having the capacity to invest in tourism offerings to provide it with a vibrant and sustainable future.
The snow season is traditionally launched on the King's Birthday long weekend in June.
