Major trophies for Marist
1 min read

Sean Masterson and Wilson McGillivray led the way for Marist Sion College at the 43rd Australian Marist Cricket Carnival held in Sydney last week.

In a wonderful performance the college collected two of the three major individual trophies, with Masterson awarded player of the carnival and McGillivray taking out bowler of the carnival for the second consecutive year.

Masterson scored 303 runs at an average of 101, which included two unbeaten centuries. McGillivray took 15 wickets at 9.60, collecting five wickets in an innings twice.

Marist-Sion College had high expectations with a very strong team. At a very even carnival the title was still up for grabs on the final day with the Warragul boys capable of finishing as high as second.

After two great wins and two heart breaking close losses, Marist Sion was outplayed on the final day by eventual champions St Gregory's Campbelltown to finish fourth in a six team pool.

Batting first on a seaming and spinning pitch against St Gregory's, Marist Sion College was in trouble early losing a steady stream of wickets.

Only Joel Batson (18) and Sean Masterson (34) showed any resistance to some very good bowling.

Jarred Carroll made an outstanding 71 off 53 balls. He and James Fowler- Ireland (18) put on a 91 run, eighth wicket partnership which gave the team 175 to defend after being bowled out in the 45th over.
