New home for Food Relief

As the cost of living crisis continues, Neerim District Food Relief has opened its new, larger premises to support the local community.
Liberal candidate for Monash Mary Aldred attended the launch of the new premises.
"The cost of living crisis is hurting people across Monash, and local food banks are stepping up to help," Ms Aldred said.
The Neerim District Food Relief now provides essential support to about 400 local households each year, from Buln Buln to Icy Creek, many of whom are elderly or live alone.
The new facility - located down a laneway off the main street - will allow the Food Relief service to expand its reach and better assist those in need.
Judy Gleeson, who received life membership in recognition of long-standing service, said it was a huge improvement on the space under the Algie Hall.
"It's practically a brand new facility," Ms Gleeson said. "We are so, so lucky."
"The main thing is we can all work whilst standing up," she laughed, recognising the difficulty volunteers and visitors had navigating the low, slanted roof of the hall. "It's all clean and new and sparkling, no dirt or dust to be found."
Ms Gleeson said the move and security of a five-year lease would not have been possible without Bendigo Bank's Community Enterprise Foundation.
"We tried to get funds elsewhere," she said, noting a community fundraising appeal.
Ms Gleeson said Neerim District Food Relief was different to other similar organisations, covering a 220 square kilometre area.
In addition to feeding those doing it tough, the organisation offers a place to sit and have a cuppa, gain support and combat loneliness.
With physical isolation a key concern, they also do deliveries of scripts and supplies as well as medical appointment transport.
Of her life membership, Ms Gleeson said "it felt really good".
After nearly 20 years with the successful operation, she is stepping back this year to let a new group fill the roles.
"I've got some really good people in place," she said.
Ms Aldred acknowledged the work of Ms Gleeson as well as Food Relief chair Paul Ford, committee members and volunteers for their enormous contribution.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Judy on this well-deserved recognition. Her dedication to helping others has made a real difference in our community," Ms Aldred said.
Ms Aldred also acknowledged the generous contributions of local businesses and community support.
