New technology to find water leaks in Gippsland Water's network is being used for the first time in a number of Baw Baw Shire towns.
To be carried out throughout this month the acoustic listening technology is being applied to detect any leaks between mains and water meters on properties through the sound created by water escaping a pipe under pressure.
The leaks will be fixed and customers told if the testing creates a suspicion that there may be a leak on their property.
The acoustic equipment is being used to test pipes at Warragul, Drouin, Buln Buln, Nilma, Darnum, Jindivick and Rokeby.
Gippsland Water's managing director Sarah Cumming said if it proved a success it was hoped to apply it in other parts of the region.
All water main main fittings and fire plugs will also be surveyed.
Ms Cumming said minimising any water losses kept water bills down.
