A special memorial garden in honour of former student Rose McMahon has been created at St Ita's Primary School, Drouin.
Supported by the Warragul Toyota team as part of its annual support for National Tree Day events, the garden in Rose's honour was created by grades one and two students on her birthday.
Rose was in grade two at St Ita's when she was killed in a tragic camping accident in 2021.
The memorial garden also will feature a friendship chair.
Principal Andrew Osler said students were involved in planting out the garden and then looking after the plants. He said as well as it being a memorial garden for Rose, it also was a great sustainability project for students to participate in.
Warragul Toyota and Habitat Creations in Yarragon provided about 120 plants for the garden.
All plants were selected for attracting pollinating insects and providing habitat for birds as well as beautifying the landscape. The plants included hairpin banksia, austral indigo, everlasting daisy, wedge leaf bush pea, pale flax lily, Bulbine lily, cut leaf daisy, butterfly flag iris and trigger plant.
National Tree Day is held in July each year but the plantings for this project were held over to co-ordinate with St Ita's memorial garden project.
Established in 1996, National Tree Day has gown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event. The program is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.
Each year, about 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate Australians about the world around them.
More than 3000 preschools, kindergartens, primary and high school students participate every year.
