"Postcards from Europe"

The Latrobe Orchestra will perform its final concert for 2024, "Postcards from Europe" at the Traralgon Town Hall Theatre on Saturday, November 30.

Audiences can expect to venture on a captivating journey across Europe with a selection of timeless compositions, featuring the stirring "March Slav", the renowned "Anvil Chorus" from "Il Trovatore", and the vibrant "Capriccio Italian".
Secretary Alison Teychenne said the concert would showcase both the talents of the orchestra and the Gippsland Children's Choir.
"It's a showcase of the work we've done during the year but also an opportunity for the Gippsland Children's Choir to join us," Alison said. "It's also a chance for our beginner program musicians to perform in front of a supportive audience."
"The Gippsland Children's Choir will sing their own set, and then we'll have a special piece called 'Flame Trees' that will incorporate some members of the orchestra as well," Alison said.
The orchestra has been rehearsing for the "Postcards from Europe" since the middle of the year.
"We played a couple of the pieces at our Yinnar concert in October, but there will be some new music in (this concert) that we haven't performed for an audience," Alison said. "(They can expect) a variety of music and melodies that they may recognise, but also it'll be a chance to introduce them to some new melodies."
Taking audiences on a brief jaunt away from Europe, across the ocean to the USA, Alison said a highlight of the concert was the performance of "Prairiesong" by Carl Strommen.
"The song is based on American (style) folksong, but it has a jazz inflection in it," Alison said. "It's fast and exciting and we love playing it, I really think the audience will love listening to it!"
Alison encouraged children and families to attend the concert as a way of introducing live music to the next generation of musicians.
"It's programmed nicely that it's not a full classical concert, but there's enough variety in there to keep little people interested and engaged," Alison said.
The Latrobe Orchestra's "Postcards from Europe" concert will take place at the Traralgon Town Hall Theatre on Saturday, November 30 from 5pm.
Adult tickets are $18 and children under 18 can attend free of charge.
