WAS Gallery resident potter Gary McPhedran, has left the clay to dry for a while, producing a collection of drawings and paintings for his solo exhibition "Some Men".
The images he draws are similar to those he paints on his pottery, friezes of figures, overlapped figures, upside down and often difficult to identify.
In these works, the figures become almost irrelevant to the composition, as the works focus on line, colour and pattern.
"It's a bit of an exploration on a theme, like Phillip Glass' music but in this case it's figures, repeated and repeated and repeated," Gary said.
Gary's original training as a graphic designer shows in these tight compositions, however the figures maintain a loose and free character. Perhaps this is characteristic borrowed from the decoration on his ceramics.
Having spent many years teaching art, photography and ceramics, Gary said producing his own artwork was "a relief".
The "Some Men" exhibition is on display at the WAS Gallery until Saturday, March 29. The gallery is open between 10am and 4pm, Wednesday to Saturday. For more information visit wasgallery.com.au
