Local stroke support group appeal
1 min read

The Warragul Stroke Support Group needs help to spread its message about the services available to those that have had a stroke and helping people identify and react to symptoms.
Treasurer Chris Greene said local businesses and individuals have been generous with donations and support for fundraising efforts but would like to spread the load.
He suggested several businesses or people could join together to meet some of the costs, one of the main ones being the cost of printing information brochures and other materials distributed at markets and street stalls that help keep the community abreast of services and support available the medical profession and clinicians up to date.
Another aim is to purchase a laptop computer to enable documentation to be kept together rather than on individuals' own computers.
Mr Greene, who has suffered two strokes, said members of the support group were survivors all seeking knowledge, companionship and a safe and trusting environment for them and their families to discuss their situations.
Meeting are held twice a month on the first and third Tuesdays for about two hours.
One of the meetings each month has an interesting guest speaker and the other includes one hour of exercises with a qualified person.
There is also always time for friendly discussions and a "cuppa."
Mr Greene said stroke was not exclusive to age or gender and can strike anytime without warning.
It occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked or is ruptured and may results in part of the brain dying leading to sudden impairment that can affect a number of bodily functions.
These include, paralysis of parts of the body, speech problems, difficulties with swallowing, vision and thinking.
People that may be prepared to assist with sponsorships or donations can contact Mr Greene by email to cmg@dcsi.net.au and by 'phoning 0491 350 243.
