A group of Junior School students from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School recently competed in the regional final of Tournament of the Minds (TOM) at Federation University.
TOM is a problem solving program for Primary and Secondary student that develops diverse skills through openended challenges across Applied Technology, Language Literature, Maths Engineering and Social Sciences disciplines.
A total of 21 St Paul’s students across three teams competed in different areas of challenge which included language literature, social sciences and maths engineering.
The tournament required the teams to present to judges a solution to a problem unique to their challenge field and each team also had to complete a short ‘spontaneous challenge’ on the day.
TOM encourages teamwork though a long term challenge of six weeks where teams work hard to write scripts, songs, create costumes and practice their play during lunch times and after school in order to present a polished and entertaining presentation in under ten minutes.
The maths engineering team achieved first place in the Gippsland Primary section and will now compete in the state finals at La Trobe University in Bundoora.
