Student leaders at Marist Sion took part in a leadership program with AFL umpires Matt Stevic and Chris Roberts recently.
Roberts, a former student at Marist Sion, said the program aimed to inspire students to set goals to reach an elite level in whichever career they wish to pursue.
"Fifteen years ago, I was in their shoes, sitting in these classrooms," Roberts said.
"I went to this school and I still live here, so I haven't really left Warragul.
"It's good to show these kids that just because you come from here, doesn't mean you can't be elite at something."
Marist Sion are undertaking a six-week AFL program coordinated by AFL Gippsland, which also includes an umpiring component.
"We're here to talk about leadership, not so much about umpiring footy, but from a community perspective," Roberts said.
"Hopefully we can show them that leaders can come from anywhere.
"They're leaders in their school, but out in the community it's a whole new ball game again."
The visit formed part of the AFL Umpire roadshow, which complements an AFL initiative to take the game to country areas during the pre-season.
Stevic and Roberts, along with former Latrobe Valley goal umpire Michael Hammond, officiated in Saturday's pre-season match between Essendon and St Kilda at Morwell, with an umpiring clinic on Sunday completing the visit.
Stevic, an AFL grand final umpire from Leongatha, and Roberts both began their umpiring careers locally at Gippsland Umpires Association.
